CIMS measurement equals Calculator
• The 2 slides showed 2 pcb coupons of different batch ( 1 and 2)
where the control on height and width were not tight enough and
did not meet the required specifications.
• The coupons were cross-sectioned and physical measurement
taken for the height and width of traces.
• The results were put into the Impedance calculator and verified
using the Qmax CIMS 1000.
• The impedances from the Calculator and from actual
measurement using the CIMS matched very well.
• From the values of the capacitance and inductances, it is easy to
see a correlation between the values and therefore can be used
to control impedance better during manufacturing.
For example for Batch1, the width can be confirmed easily by visual measurement on the
trace. You put this width of 0.285mm back into the calculator and set Zo to be 30.25
ohms as measured by the CIMS. The height calculated will be 0.291mm which is less than
the design target of 0.3mm.
In summary , you are now able to check and predict the height of between the trace and
the gnd without the need to do any cross sectioning.
Try and do the same calculation for Batch 2.
** another point to take note: the higher the C, the lower will be the L and Zo .
